The Academic Encounters series uses a content-based approach to help students develop the skills they need to meet the demands of college courses in an English-speaking environment. Life in Society is the content focus of this intermediate to high-intermediate reading, study skills, and writing text in the series. It introduces students to stimulating topics within the field of sociology using authentic readings from university-level textbooks.Topics introduced include: peer group pressure, balancing home and work, and the influence of the media. Exercises that accompany the readings develop important reading skills such as reading for detail, reading critically, and applying what you have read. Study skills such as highlighting, note taking, and preparing for a quiz are also practised. Each chapter ends with a writing assignment, and tasks to build specific academic writing skills are sprinkled throughout the book.
