Родился в семье служащего, окончил юридический факультет Московского университета (1917) и одновременно историко-философский факультет университета им. Шанявского. С 1924 работал в Московском государственном институте экспериментальный психологии, затем в основанном им институте дефектологии позднее читал курсы лекции в ряде вузов Москвы, Ленинграда и Харькова.
